The Climate of the Costa Blanca

We’ve all heard of people moving to Spain for their health and it’s not just a myth or old wives’ tale, the Costa Blanca area of Spain has a climate with many health benefits. The World Health Organization have gone so far as to recommend this climate as being one of the healthiest in the world, so use that as an excuse for moving to Spain!

The reason for the climate being so healthy is that it is a subtropical (dry) Mediterranean climate with hot summers, dry and mild winters, low humidity and lovely, clean air. It is the perfect weather for those who suffer with illnesses made worse by damp, cold winters – arthritis, rheumatism, allergies and asthma.

Average temperatures in Spain range widely because Spain is such a vast country, with six different climatic zones – oceanic climate, mountain climate, continental Mediterranean climate (interior), Mediterranean climate proper, dry Mediterranean and subtropical climate. On the Costa Blanca average temperatures range from 16ºC in January to 32ºC in August. In the summer, the Torrevieja temperature can reach as high as 40ºC, but there is generally a sea breeze to cool you down! Just remember to use sun protection, wear a hat and take to the shade in the middle of the day.

The Torrevieja Climate

Torrevieja is on the southern end of the Costa Blanca and so benefits from the wonderful Costa Blnca Climate. However, there is more good news – the Las Salinas salt water lagoons give the city and surrounding area, its own micro-climate which is even healthier than the main Costa Blanca one! Great news for those allergy sufferers and people with rheumatism and arthritis. You can also get heath benefits from bathing in the lagoons.

Torrevieja has an annual average temperature of about 19ºC but typical temperatures in Torrevieja range from an average temperature of 12ºC in January to 27ºC in July and August.

April is the wettest month with an average rainfall of 71mm and July is the driest with an average rainfall of 0mm (data from the Spanish Institute of Meteorology).

The weather in Torrevieja in winter is so much better than the cold, damp, depressing weather of the UK and Northern Europe. Most days are sunny and bright and you can even wear short-sleeves on some winter days! Even December and January have an average of 6 hours of sunshine per day!

Knowing the current weather and forecast helps you to plan your holiday and also helps you if you are looking to move to the area. Don’t make the mistake of only packing shorts for a winter holiday or buying a house with no source of heating – temperatures drop at night and some winter days can be chilly!
